Heffernan accused of impersonating Joyce.

The Opposition has raised allegations in the Senate about Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan impersonating Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce.

Labor Senator Robert Ray also asked if an investigation had been launched into claims Senator Heffernan pretended to be a member of ASIO while speaking to the manager of Queensland’s Cubbie Station.

Senator Ray says Senator Heffernan’s sense of humour could get him into trouble.

“Could he also confirm that Senator Heffernan has boasted that he impersonates Senator Barnaby Joyce… and rings Queensland constituents of Mr Joyce and asks them what they think of Senator Heffernan,” he said.

But Senate leader Nick Minchin made light of the claims.

“I can confirm that Senator Heffernan has a remarkable and attractive sense of humour, which endears him to all his colleagues,” he said.

In my more deluded moments I also think I have one of them thar marginally "remarkable and attractive sense[s] of humour," which endears me to all my colleagues who aren't smart enough to make a mercifully quick getaway. I also think that were I exercise the aforementioned sense d'humour (AKA smartarsery) at any airport desporting signs indicating that such smartarse comments are the last thing you say before they excise your tongue and throw you into chokey for 10 to 20 strokes of the Julian calendar without parole.

9.01 Threats regarding aviation security (1) A person must not, while at a security controlled airport or on board an aircraft, engage in conduct that a reasonable person could interpret as a threat to commit an act of unlawful interference with aviation. Penalty: 50 penalty units. (2) An offence against subregulation (1) is an offence of strict liability. Examples of conduct for subregulation (1): Making jokes about bombs in baggage; Leaving articles of baggage unattended.
